The Capital One Credit Card Guide

Have you been looking for a new credit card?

You’ve probably noticed that there are a lot of credit card issuers out there. And, so many credit cards to choose from.

I’m sure you’ve also come across Capital One. In addition to being one of the ten (10) larges deposit banks, Capital One is also the fourth-largest credit card company in the U.S. as measured by spending.

Capital One was founded in 1994. Initially, it was a simple monoline bank that just focused on credit cards. Over time, they have added more business lines to their portfolio, including auto loans and retail banking, but 75% of their revenue still comes from credit cards.

Capital One invests heavily in data and technology within their business: they have their own intelligent assistant called Eno that alerts customers when recurring charges are higher than usual and a proprietary credit score monitoring tool called CreditWise. But these tools are not the main attraction: the credit cards and the benefits they offer is the real draw.

From Cash Back to Rewards Cards: Capital One Has Card for Every Need

As I mentioned above, credit cards are a major part of Capital One’s heritage and one of its core businesses today.

So, it’s no surprise that Capital One has some of the best cards out there.

Cash back cards, rewards cards, cards with no annual fee, or a low intro APR. There’s a card for every need.

Let’s take a closer look at some of these credit card offers.

Travel Rewards: Capital One Venture Cards

Travel rewards cards allow you to earn miles and apply them to your travel purchases. Capital One has two different travel rewards cards:

  • Venture® Rewards
  • VentureOne® Rewards

With Venture® Rewards, you can earn 2x miles per dollar on every purchase and 50,000 bonus miles once you spend $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening. You can also get a $100 credit for the Global Entry or TSA Pre✓® fee. The annual fee is $95.

VentureOne® Rewards allows you to earn 1.25x miles per dollar on every purchase and 20,000 bonus miles after spending $1,000 in the first 3 months after you open your account. There is no annual fee for this card.

The Venture® Rewards card is a better choice for cardholders that spend more every month. If you spend enough to earn a good amount of miles (and travel enough to use them), the $95 annual fee pays for itself. If you still want travel rewards but do not spend a lot every month, consider the VentureⓇ One Rewards card.

With either call, you can use the miles you earn from the rewards program with any airline, no restrictions, or blackout dates. You can also redeem them for other travel-related purchases, like hotels, rental cars, and cruises.

Cash Back Rewards: Savor®and Quicksilver® Cards

This is probably the most popular type of credit card.

Cash back rewards cards put money back in your pocket every time you spend. The amount is always a certain percentage of what you spent and can vary depending on the category. Sometimes you can earn more when you spend on a specific category like groceries or gas.

Rewards can vary depending on purchase categories have more associated rewards. Capital One has four different cash back rewards cards:

  • Savor® Rewards
  • SavorOne® One Rewards
  • Quicksilver® Rewards
  • QuicksilverOne® Rewards

With Savor® Rewards, you will earn unlimited 4% cash back on dining and entertainment, 2% at grocery stores, and 1% on all other purchases. Plus, you will receive 8% cash back on tickets bought through Vivid Seats. You will also earn a one-time $300 cash bonus if you spend $3,000 in the first 3 months from account opening. This card has a $95 annual fee.

Like the Venture® Rewards and VentureOne® Rewards cards, the SavorⓇ Rewards card has a sister card that carries no annual fee but has fewer benefits called the SavorOne® Rewards card.

The SavorOne® Rewards card offers unlimited 3% cash back on dining and entertainment, 2% at grocery stores, and 1% on all other purchases. The card also offers a one-time $150 cash bonus once you spend $500 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening.

The Quicksilver® Rewards and the QuicksilverOne® One Rewards cards both give 1.5% cash back on all purchases. However, the Quicksilver® Rewards card allows you to earn a one-time $150 cash bonus if you spend $500 within 3 months from account opening. It doesn’t have an annual fee.

The QuicksilverOne® Rewards card doesn’t come with an initial cash bonus and carries a $39 annual fee. Still, it is easier for potential cardholders to get approved for this card than the standard Quicksilver® Rewards.

All the cash back you earn will be available in your Capital One account. You can either apply it to your monthly bill, deposit it in another bank account, or even transfer it over to Amazon to make purchases there.

Balance Transfer Credit Cards

Balance transfer credit cards are becoming a popular choice among consumers. These cards let you transfer your current credit card balance to a new one with a low introductory annual percentage rate (APR). This allows you to save money on interest payments and use that extra cash to pay off your balance.

The low intro APR is temporary. It typically lasts 3 months before jumping back up to the standard APR.  You will also have to pay an upfront fee.

Fees aside, these cards can be a great tool if used properly.

Some of the cards listed above offer the balance transfer feature. Here they are:

  •  Quicksilver® Rewards
    • Intro balance transfer APR: 0% for the first 15 months.
    • Regular balance transfer APR: 15.49% to 25.49% (variable)
    • Balance transfer fee: 3% with a minimum of $10.
  • SavorOne® One Rewards
    • Intro balance transfer APR: 0% for the first 15 months.
    • Regular balance transfer APR: 15.49% to 25.49% (variable)
    • Balance transfer fee: 3% with a minimum of $10.
